The name 'Montecristo' is derived from the 1844 novel 'The Count of Monte Cristo' by Alexandre Dumas. As this was the most popular novel among the cigar rollers at the time, the brand's founder, Alonso Menendez, decided to combine the last two words of the novel's title - Monte and Cristo - to create the brand name.
The Montecristo brand logo features six golden knight's swords surrounding a center of lily flowers, paying homage to the swords mentioned in the novel. Montecristo is currently the highest-exporting Cuban cigar brand and is considered the benchmark for evaluating the quality of other Cuban cigar brands.
